How to Log In to the Mailman System

Visit https://lists.unr.edu and log in using your NetID username and password and manage the list using the Basic List Actions below.

First Time Log In Only

Before you can manage your lists you must log in to the system and verify your email address:

  1. Click on your NetID in the top right corner
  2. Choose Account from the drop down menu
  3. Choose E-mail Addresses
  4. Your email will show that it is not verified and there will be a button to resend the verification link. If you manage lists with an email address that is not @unr.edu (for example: @med.unr.edu or @asun.unr.edu) you will need to add that email address and verify it.
  5. Click the resend verification link and click the link in the email you receive to verify your email address. Once you refresh you should see your email address with a green Verified box.

Basic List Actions

Sending to a list:

To send to a list simply send an email to the list name and the message will be handled according to the list configuration (see message acceptance settings below). Mailman has the additional option of posting to a list using the Web interface.

Message Acceptance Settings:

The message acceptance settings are set for members (subscribers) and non-members (senders that are not subscribed to the list):

  • Hold for moderation: The message will be held and an owner or moderator will need to accept or reject it.
  • Reject (with notification): The message will not be sent to the list and the sender will be notified that it was rejected.
  • Discard (no notification): The message will not be sent to the list and the sender will not be notified.
  • Accept immediately (bypass other rules): The message will immediately be sent to the list.
    • Use this option for list members if you have a list that subscribers should be able to send to without moderation.
    • For non-members this option should only be used for a public list that anyone should be able to send to without moderation.

Owner List Actions

Adding/removing an owner:

After logging in to https://lists.unr.edu click the Mailman Settings link and choose the list name you want to manage. Under the Members tab choose Owners.

Adding an Owner

On the list owners screen enter the email address of the owner you would like to add and press the Add owner button.

Removing an Owner

To remove an owner, press the red Delete button next to the email address of the owner that should be removed. On the confirmation screen confirm that you are removing the owner role.

Adding/removing a moderator:

After logging in to https://lists.unr.edu click the Mailman Settings link and choose the list name you want to manage. Under the Members tab choose Moderators.

Adding a Moderator

On the list moderators screen enter the email address of the moderator you would like to add and press the Add Moderator button.

Removing a Moderator

To remove a moderator press the red Delete button next to the email address of the moderator that should be removed. On the confirmation screen confirm that you are removing the moderator role.

Adding/removing a subscriber:

To view and remove subscribers after logging in to https://lists.unr.edu click the Mailman Settings link and choose the list name you want to manage. Under the Members tab choose Subscribers.

Adding a Subscriber

To add subscribers choose the Mass operations tab and then the Mass subscribe option. On the Mass subscription screen enter the email address that you are adding to the list and press the Subscribe users button.

Removing a Subscriber

On the list subscribers screen you can see all subscribers and choose to either Unsubscribe Selected members of the list or Unsubscribe All subscribers of the list.

Moderator List Actions (Owners can also perform these actions)

These actions only apply to lists with message moderation, these actions do not need to be done on lists that are configured to automatically accept or reject messages.

Approving or Rejecting Moderated Messages:

If a message is sent from a moderated member list owners and moderators will receive an email that there is a message awaiting moderation.

After logging in to https://lists.unr.edu click the Mailman Settings link and choose the list name you want to manage.

Click the Held Messages tab. Any messages held for moderation will appear in the list:

Click the check box next to the message you are moderating and select the action to take on the top right:

  • Accept: The message will be sent to the list.
  • Reject: The message will not be sent to the list and the sender will be notified that it was rejected.
  • Discard: The message will not be sent to the list and the sender will not be notified.

Mailman is Subscriber-centric

Important Note: As an owner or a moderator you must also be a subscriber to the list. If you remove yourself from the subscribers list you will no longer be able to manage your list. If you prefer not to receive emails that are sent to a list you manage you can change your list based preferences:

After logging in to https://lists.unr.edu click Mailman Settings

  • Click List-based preferences.
  • In the Delivery Status column for the list you do not want to receive emails from choose Disabled
  • Click the Save button.
